Teaching the #Metoo
School’s act as microcosms of society, a training ground for half formed humans to create identity and try out roles and rituals of the adult world. Controversy belongs in the classroom where we teach students to critically engage with the world and question everything the media tells them as truth. We are raising citizens, but the question is, are we raising better citizens? If we accept that our society is patriarchal we accept that physical and financial power and the ability to assert it over others (be they men or women) is the currency that defines status. This acknowledges that the competitive impulse that underpins all modern social action is the manifestation of the patriarchal nature of our world. We must then admit that this is a bad thing, that patriarchy breeds toxic masculinity and leads to a culture where sexual violence (towards both men and women), and violent competition in general is the norm.
